This exhibit relives Golden's earliest
days, before Colorado achieved statehood. Golden served
as a the territorial capitol from 1862 - 1867. The
exhibits includes early maps of the territory, portraits
and brief biographies of some of our founding fathers,
the printing press that the legislature used to publish
its acts, and a quilt depicting Golden's early history!
This
quilt illustrates the history of Golden through
buildings and scenes. The center medallion is the Great
Seal of the Jefferson Territory, later the Colorado
Territory. The W.A.H. Loveland Building is shown on the
quilt; the building served as the Territorial Capitol
from 1862 until 1867. It is depicted as Koenig
Mercantile. Also shown are the Astor House Hotel, George
West's home, and the Rock Flour Mill.
The quilt was loaned to the Golden
Pioneer for this exhibit by the Rocky Mountain Quilt
Museum. The Quilt Museum is located on Washington Avenue
in downtown Golden
