Golden City: Territory Capitol
Special Exhibit for Summer of 2000

 

This exhibit relives Golden's earliest days, before Colorado achieved statehood. Golden served as a the territorial capitol from 1862 - 1867. The exhibits includes early maps of the territory, portraits and brief biographies of some of our founding fathers, the printing press that the legislature used to publish its acts, and a quilt depicting Golden's early history!

The center medallion is the Great Seal of the Jefferson Territory, later the Colorado Territory. The W.A.H. Loveland Building is shown on the quilt; the building served as the Territorial Capitol from 1862 until 1867. It is depicted as Koenig Mercantile. Also shown are the Astor House Hotel, George West's home, and the Rock Flour Mill.

The quilt was loaned to the Golden Pioneer for this exhibit by the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum. The Quilt Museum is located on Washington Avenue in downtown Golden
