Currently,
a wedding exhibit is displayed at the Golden Pioneer
Museum. Five exquisite wedding gowns and one tuxedo are
on display. You can find details about these garments,
and also about wedding ceremonies in the late 19th
century and early 20th century. This includes details
about honeymoons, veils and headdresses, wedding
garters, marriage fees, trousseaus, and much more! For
example, did you know that in Victorian and Edwardian
days it was not unusual for a couple to have their
honeymoon consist of a Grand Tour of Europe for two
weeks, a month, or even more?
Along with the exhibit are tips for a
successful marriage, for example, there is a poem which
describes that the color of the wedding dress determined
how your marriage was going to turn out. The exhibit
also includes actual wedding certificates (one dating
all the way back to 1889) and several wedding photos of
couples married between 1899 and 1920. Other accessories
on display are beautiful fans, shoes, Bibles, necklaces,
and trousseau garments including such popular items as
stockings, night gowns, and undergarments. The exhibit
runs through the end of August, so check it out and
discover what has changed and what has remained the same
in the tradition of marriage.
