Museum Exhibits

The museum has both permanent and special temporary exhibits.

The permanent exhibits reflect various aspects of Golden's history and development, such as ranching, mining, etc.  Most of theses exhibits contain artifacts donated by the area's pioneer families.

Special Exhibits

Now Showing

Special Exhibits are only available for a limited time

April through December: W.H. Jackson prints featuring the Oregon Trail

Selections of lithographic prints from original watercolor paintings by William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) given on loan by the Golden Civic Foundation, will be displayed in the Museum’s new library and meeting room on a rotating basis throughout the year.

April through summer: Coors Pottery

The name Coors is synonymous with beer, but it also has deep roots in pottery. For two decades before World War II, the company turned out a varied line of dinnerware and other household ceramics that now are valuable collectibles. Recently, the Golden Pioneer Museum received a significant collection of Coors pottery to enhance its current Coors exhibit.

U.S. Cavalry Collection

A must see for anyone interested in military history! Collection of saddles, bits and bridles, swords and sabers mostly relating to the U.S. Cavalry, on loan from long-time museum supporter John Gilmore.

Permanent Exhibits

Native American Artifacts

Native Americans inhabited the Golden area for thousands of years. The museum has primitive artifacts (such as arrowheads and stone tools) from the earliest inhabitants, as well as pottery and basketwork from more recent Native Americans.

Lois Elhers American
Native American Doll Collection

One of the museum's most remarkable acquisitions is the Lois Elhers Native American Doll collection. Read more....

Early Household Items

The museum has a good collection of 19th-century household goods, such as kitchen implements, dishes, cook books, an early (non-electric) vacuum cleaner, a bee-smoker, and some very early sewing and washing machines. (See if you can figure out what they are!)

WPA Dioramas of
early Golden

Sleigh

We have a sleigh that was used for winter deliveries by the Koenig grocery store (which was located in the Loveland building, at 12th and Washington-now the Old Capital Grill restaurant). We were told that the horse that pulled this sleigh knew his route so well that he just stopped at the houses that needed deliveries.

Gun Collection

Guns were an essential item in the settling of the West, both for hunting and for ensuring "law and order!" Among the guns in our collection are a Parker shot gun and a Winchester repeater.  See photograph of guns at top of page

Military Implements

We have military artifacts dating back to the Revolutionary War. Our collection of World War I and World War II items is particularly good, and includes some items that were captured from the enemy.

Children's Section

Our charming children's area shows the clothes that children used to wear, the toys they played with, and the furniture that they used. Read more...

Musical Instruments

We have a number of antique musical instruments, including a dulcimer, pump organs, and a velvet-covered piano that won a prize for the design at the 1893 Columbian Exhibition in Chicago.

Nineteenth-Century Clothing, Hats, Jewelry

The museum has a wonderful collection of antique clothing, including wedding gowns, hoop skirts, jewelry...from formalwear to underwear!  Read more...

Mining Implements

Golden was founded largely as a staging and provisioning point for miners heading into the mountains, looking for gold. The museum has a display of 19th-century mining tools, including carbide lamps, miner's candlesticks, etc.

Coors Ceramics

One of the methods that the Coors Brewing Company used to survive Prohibition was to produce other things...including ceramics. See photograph of ceramics at the top of the page.

Ranching Implements

Golden has always been a ranching area. The museum has a number of relics from early ranching life, including ox yokes and saddles...even a lady's side-saddle.

Mercantile

Our mercantile section displays some of the merchandise that would have been available to Golden's early residents. Read more...
