Early Golden Miners

Placer mines were the reason for the first settlement in the Clear Creek Valley in 1858-1859.  This brought in a large population of new settlers.  The first coal mines were discovered in Jefferson County at this time as well.  The influx of settlers created a market and a labor supply for even more mines (had rock as well as placer) after the Civil War.
