Flood Damage in Golden

The following information was provided by Golden historian Richard Gardner.

This photo shows Golden's great flood of 1896.  The picture is taken looking west along 10th Street at Tucker Gulch.  The Treffeisen Building (510 10th St.) is in the center of the picture and was severely damaged.  A small house formerly stood in between that building on the gulch. The picture shows that the flood completely wiped away all evidence of its existence.  An elderly couple of Swedish immigrants by the name of Johnson lived there, and were killed instantly.   They were among 29 victims of this powerful storm, in Golden, Mt. Vernon Canyon, Morrison, and Evergreen.
