Golden has been served by its own newspaper for well over a century.
George West published the
Western Mountaineer for one year, ending in December of 1860. He spent
1861 driving freight wagons, 1862-1865 serving in the Civil War, and 1866
helping his friend William Byers publish the newly-founded Rocky Mountain
News.
In 1866, West returned to
Golden to begin publishing his own newspaper once again (this time called the
Colorado Transcript). The Transcript is now the second-oldest
newspaper in Colorado, with only the Rocky Mountain News pre-dating it.
Today's Golden
Transcript has given the Golden Pioneer Museum permission to republish some
of its Golden
history-related articles, and several appear on
this web site.
Over the years, the
Transcript has been housed in 4 different buildings. This picture is an
interior shot of the Transcript at 1115 Washington Avenue, which the newspaper
occupied from 1870 - 1967. It shows Oscar Goetz and Eva Nixon Ashland hard at
work.
